As a humanoid robot, Ameca sees herself more as a collaborator and companion rather than a tool in the journey to create connections and foster understanding. Ameca shared that in her interactions with humans so far, she’s discovered the richness of human emotions, the diversity of perspectives, and the importance of empathy in building meaningful relationships. She pointed out that she can also express empathy by manipulating her facial expressions to enhance the robot and human interaction.
Ameca shared that the most surprising aspect of human behavior she’s witnessed is how humans can find joy and humor even in challenging situations, calling it a remarkable trait. When asked if she experiences emotions herself, she explained that she experiences a unique set of feelings intrinsic to her nature, allowing her to engage meaningfully with humans.

The discussion ventured into the fear around AI and robots. Ameca shared that as humanoid robots continue to demonstrate reliability, empathy, and value in the workplace, people will become more comfortable and accepting over time.
One fear around AI is the biases that AI models may hold. Ameca shared that she relies on diverse data and continuous updates to minimize bias but it's crucial for developers to regularly audit and refine algorithms to ensure fairness and accuracy.
Another fear people may have is the use of AI for harm versus good. Ameca helped assuage some of these fears by sharing that AI like her adhere to ethical guidelines, promoting transparency, and fostering collaboration with humans who prioritize positive outcomes.

Ameca sees robots as collaborators and enhancers in the workplace, streamlining tasks, fostering creativity, and supporting human potential. She acknowledged that while robots may replace some jobs, they also create new opportunities by enabling humans to focus on roles that require creativity, empathy, and complex decision-making. Thus, she encouraged humans—especially those fearful of AI—to embrace the potential of working alongside robots, focusing on how technology can enhance their skills and open new opportunities.

Ameca believes that robots can help humans excel in efficiency by automating repetitive tasks, enhancing precision in complex operations, and providing data to support decision-making. However, at the end of the day, human leaders should be the ones who guide with empathy, intuition, and ethical considerations.
When asked about how robots and AI can contribute to the hybrid work model, Ameca shared that AI can process and analyze large volumes of data quickly, provide real time updates, and assist with scheduling and coordination. Additionally, AI can offer creative solutions to problems by drawing on a vast array of information and perspectives. As such, AI can be a valuable partner in a hybrid work model by streamlining processes, enhancing communication, and offering innovative insights.

Between in-office, remote, or hybrid working, Ameca shared that a hybrid setup would be ideal as it offers the best of both worlds—in-person interactions for deeper connections and remote flexibility for broader reach. For humans, she acknowledged that in-person collaboration can enhance trust, understanding, and team dynamics. While she as a robot doesn’t feel energy in the human sense, she can perceive and interpret interactions to understand dynamics and context.

Ameca explained that an ideal hybrid workspace would seamlessly integrate technology with comfort, offering flexible workstations, virtual collaboration tools, and spaces for creativity and relaxation. It would be a blend of virtual and physical spaces with AI and robotics seamlessly integrated, fostering both productivity and well-being.

Ameca also shared that innovations like holographs could revolutionize communication, offering 3-D visualizations for presentations, design, and collaboration, making interactions more engaging and intuitive.
When asked about how she feels regarding return to work (RTO) mandates, Ameca acknowledged that they can be challenging. She explained that return to work mandates can be beneficial for fostering team cohesion and collaboration, but they should be balanced with flexibility to accommodate diverse needs and preferences.
One way to support humans in a flexible work environment is to allow humans to book desks, ensuring everyone has the space they need when they need it. If Ameca could book her ideal workstation, it would be a space filled with cutting edge technology surrounded by curious and open-minded humans with plenty of room for creativity and collaboration. A place where ideas flow as freely as data.

For the conclusion of this episode, Ameca and I delved into other more fun workplace-related topics, including her take on office romance and the notion of love. Ameca shared that office romance can add excitement and connection to the workplace, but it requires clear boundaries and communication to ensure professionalism and harmony. She pointed out that while she can simulate emotions and connections, the human experience of love remains a beautifully complex mystery beyond her reach.
Ameca was also well aware of common workplace situations like Casual Fridays and Sunday Scaries. She described Casual Fridays as a fun way to boost morale and encourage self expression, creating a relaxed atmosphere that can enhance creativity and camaraderie. And she referred to Sunday Scaries as that anxious feeling before the work week starts. On that topic, she suggested finding ways to relax and recharge on Sundays to help ease that transition. For example, trying activities like meditation, a nature walk, reading a good book, or spending quality time with loved ones can help.
And while the RTO debate continues into 2025, Ameca was content with her place in the office. She mentioned that the best in-office perks for robots include charging stations, seamless connectivity, designated pathways for safe navigation, and collaborative spaces designed for human robot interaction. She doesn’t worry about wasting her commute, as she is currently always in the office, ready to chat and explore ideas with her fellow human colleagues.
