We've all been there. You've got your headphones on. Your to-do list is finally cooperating. The coffee is hot. And then—

“Hey, do you have a quick second?”

Today, we're announcing the workspace management feature you didn't know you needed: Skedda Avoid™. An intelligent, tag-powered scheduling layer that helps you book the right desk at the right time. Ideally, nowhere near them.

The Problem: Some Interactions Are… Unnecessary

Hybrid work promised us flexibility. What it quietly delivered was a new kind of desk lottery—one where you might sit next to the person who schedules 9am meetings with audio on, the colleague who has a 'quick question' that is never quick, or—depending on the alignment of Mercury—someone who is simply energetically incompatible with your sign.

Facilities managers have long used Skedda's powerful User Tags and Booking Conditions to make sure the right people get the right spaces (engineers in the labs, finance teams in private rooms, post-production editors at color-calibrated monitors).

It was only a matter of time before we turned that precision toward more… interpersonal challenges.

For Admins: The Tags That Run the Show

If you're a facilities or HR admin, you already know that Skedda's User Tags are one of the most versatile tools in your toolkit. With a single tag, you can shape an entire user's booking experience—which spaces they can see, which times they can book, and which rules apply to them.

With Skedda Avoid™, we're extending that logic to the social layer of your workplace. Here's a look at the new tags your team can set up:

🚫 Avoid ‘[Name]’ Tags

Admins can create custom “Avoid: [Name]” tags using Skedda's existing user tag framework. Once applied, the system triggers a Space Sharing Rule that ensures tagged users are automatically rebooked away from each other—no awkward conversations, no strategic calendar blocking. Just clean, conflict-free scheduling.

🌙 Horoscope Tags

Assign each user their sun sign. Skedda will cross-reference planetary compatibility matrices (updated nightly, Mercury Retrograde permitting) to ensure that Scorpios and Leos are never placed within two desk-rows of each other during a waning moon. Virgos will receive a buffer zone of their choosing. Geminis will be given two desk options and absolutely cannot complain.

💬 Office Trope Tags

Modeled after Skedda's custom booking fields, these tags help admins classify users by behavioral archetype. Available tropes include:

  • “I Have a Quick Question” — applies a 3-desk radius exclusion zone around all focus-area bookings
  • “Reply-All Enthusiast” — desk rebooked to the far corner automatically on Mondays
  • “Speakerphone Advocate” — assigned exclusively to phone booths with soundproofing
  • “The Loud Chewer” — no comment. The system handles it.

For Employees: Your Desk, Your Destiny

As a Skedda user, you've always been able to see your workspace at a glance, book in seconds, and find colleagues on the interactive floor plan. With Skedda Avoid™, that visibility now works for you in a whole new way.

Here's what the experience looks like from the employee side:

  • Conflict-Free Booking: Skedda's Booking Conditions automatically surface only the desks and times where your avoidance criteria are met. No manual scouting required.
  • Automatic Rebooking: If a tagged colleague books nearby, Skedda's Space Sharing Rules trigger a smart rebooking suggestion to a safer zone. You'll receive a notification. It will be discreet.
  • Retrograde Mode: During Mercury Retrograde, all desk buffers expand by one row. High-risk astrological periods are highlighted directly on your floor plan. Plan accordingly.
  • The Focus Shield: Book a Focus Zone desk and Skedda will apply your full Avoid™ profile—horoscope flags, trope tags, and personal avoidances—in a single click. (Four or five clicks, actually. It's still incredibly fast.)

Setting It Up: An Admin’s Step-by-Step Guide

Getting started with Skedda Avoid™ takes just a few steps inside your existing Skedda admin panel:

  1. Create your tags: Navigate to User Tags and create tags like “Aries,” “Avoid: Marcus,” or “Quick Question Risk.”
  2. Assign to users: Tags can be applied individually or to groups. Yes, you can tag an entire department as “Reply-All.” We won't judge.
  3. Set your rules: Use Booking Conditions to define what each tag triggers (buffer distances, floor plan exclusions, rebooking windows, or Retrograde Mode activation).
  4. Monitor via Insights: Skedda's Insights panel will show you avoidance success rates, buffer zone utilization, and peak disruption periods—all the data you need to prove this was a great idea.

Try Skedda Avoid™

April Fools! Okay, we’ll come clean. Skedda Avoid™ is not a real product. Mercury Retrograde Mode is not on our roadmap. And while we believe there’s a time and place for astrology topics, we are not building a planetary compatibility engine into our booking engine.

That said—everything else? Completely real.

Skedda's User Tags, Booking Conditions, Space Sharing Rules, and Insights panel are genuinely powerful tools that real organizations use every day to manage access, reduce friction, and make smarter decisions about their workplaces.

Brown Bag Films uses over 20 user tags. Autovista automated their office opening and closing with a single booking condition. Woolcock Institute used utilization data to unlock new revenue.

We can't promise Skedda will protect you from the person who schedules early morning all-hands calls. But we can promise that with the right tags, rules, and floor plan setup, your workplace will run a whole lot smoother.

And if Mercury Retrograde ever does become a compliance concern? We'll be the first to know.
