TL;DR Article Summary

Skedda was proud to be an exhibitor at IFMA’s World Workplace 2025 Conference in Minneapolis. It was an energizing week of learning, connection, and inspiration with facilities managers from around the world.

Celebrating 30 Years of IFMA

The conference opened with Christa Dodoo’s address marking 30 years of IFMA and the impact of its 122 global chapters. Michael Geary, IFMA’s President and CEO, reminded us of the essential role of FMs: keeping people happy, productive, and safe.

Keynote Address That Inspired

In a keynote sponsored by Davies Office, Shark Tank’s Daymond John shared his five “shark points” for success—starting with the importance of setting goals and doing your homework. He also reflected on his impressive journey from humble beginnings to building a global brand, inspiring attendees to think big and stay resilient.

The session sparked lively discussion on the evolving role of FMs. As Bill Davies put it, why would anyone want to be an FM? Because you care.

The Big Kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium

One of the highlights of the week was IFMA’s 30th anniversary celebration at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. Attendees took to the field to enjoy live music, food, and games—including the chance to kick field goals where the pros play. It was a memorable evening that brought the FM community together to celebrate three decades of World Workplace with energy, connection, and plenty of fun.

The Rise of the FM Analyst

The next day IFMA Director of Research Matt Tucker opened a session with compelling global research, revealing “facilities management is entering a data-driven era where curiosity, interpretation, and storytelling matter as much as technical expertise.” This is very aligned with the conversations Skedda has with FM leaders on the evolution of the role and how data fluency is redefining the profession.

The session explored the emergence of the FM Analyst mindset, the challenges of building capability, and the key traits needed for success.

5 key takeaways:
  1. The FM Analyst is not a narrow specialist, but rather represents a broader profile. FMs must engage with data, spot trends, and translate insights. It’s about cultivating curiosity, storytelling, and data confidence.
  2. Major capability development challenges exist. Formal training in data analysis or digital tools are often overlooked. Most FMs develop data capabilities on-the-job through trial and error or peer coaching.
  3. Analytics depends on leadership buy-in and recognition of FMs strategic value. Analytics is an organizational, not just a technical, capability. Without supporting structures, insight work fails to scale.
  4. Data fragmentation, inconsistency, and limited interoperability continue to be major challenges, even in technologically advanced environments. These issues undermine confidence in analytics and slow down progress.
  5. Data alone doesn’t create impact. Storytelling is crucial for data to become actionable. It must be framed, communicated, and connected to key organizational values (e.g., linked to cost, risk, sustainability, and UX).
Defining FM success

Facilities management is evolving into a role in which operational expertise is as important as digital fluency. The ability to interpret and act on data elevates FM to the boardroom, and will be a defining competency for the next generation of FM leaders.

AI in Facilities Management: Separating Fact from Fiction

A standout education session featured Kayla Oliver (Head of Product, Partnerships and Innovation, ABM Industries), Sean Luster (Vice President, Real Estate and Workplace Services, Salesforce), and Reshmi Chakraborty (Vice President, Data, Analytics & AI Engineering, ABM). Together, they explored how AI is reshaping FM—from predictive maintenance and energy management to robotics and occupant experience.

The panel emphasized that secure data, clear documentation, and ongoing education are critical for success. Their advice: start with clean data, align AI to business goals, and make sure the whole team is part of the journey.

The takeaway? AI won’t replace facility managers—it will empower them to drive better outcomes.

Skedda at IFMA World Workplace

We loved connecting with attendees and customers on the show floor—fueled by plenty of espresso shots from our in-booth barista! The conversations gave us a deeper appreciation for the evolving role of facilities managers, who today are not only responsible for keeping spaces safe and efficient but also for shaping the modern workplace experience. Hearing firsthand about the challenges of space management, hybrid work, and creating people-centered environments left us inspired and energized to continue building tools that help streamline operations, unlock flexibility, and support the future of work.

Looking Ahead

This year’s IFMA World Workplace reinforced that FM is undergoing a significant transformation. With new technologies, shifting workplace models, and a renewed focus on people, FMs are shaping the future of work.

At Skedda, we’re excited to support that future—helping organizations create workplaces that are smarter, more flexible, and ready for what’s next.
